Route: EASY
Total height of climb: 380 meters
Distance: 10 Km
Walking time: 3 hours
The route starts at
'Le Strette', beside the Sovara river (400 metres above sea level) and immediately after fording the stream you come to
'il Conventino', an ancient building of uncertain origin, situated on a strategic point in the valley.
From here, turning left along a narrow footpath that runs along the boundary walls of the convent, nowadays reduced to ruins, you ascend the steepest part of the route up to the slopes of Castello di Montauto, feudal residence of the powerful Counts of Galbino. Of the ancient structure, immersed in the woods of pines, oaks and hornbeams, only the round tower remains, with its very similar character to that of the round apse of St. Augustine's church in Anghiari.
Constructed in a dominating position (780 m) nowadays it is a private house which can be viewed by appointment.
From here the route goes down the track of the old road which connected the various buildings and habitations belonging to the Barbolani Counts of Montauto and Galbino: Camprione, Sasseto (which was the home of the brigand Sagresto), Camiano, il Convento dei Cappuccini di Montauto, and Villa la Barbolana (dating back to the 17th century). The mountainous and arid landscape of the Monti Rognosi give way to the traditional agriculture of olive groves, terracing and mixed ploughed fields and woods.
The route ends near Tavernelle, beside the Sovara river. |
