Start out from the castle of
Galbino at 445m. This castle, placed between a tributary
of the Sovara and the main Libbia road, is an ancient
castle whose origins are thought to date back to the
year 1000. Transformed into a villa, the castle today
consists of a turret in the centre of the roof and small
round towers placed at its four corners. A splendid
loggia with stone columns runs along the whole of the
fascia, which is clearly visible from the upper part of
the road that joins Tavernelle with the ex-convent of
San Niccolo a Gello, (A modern centre for religious
groups and communities.)
Having admired the castle, continue
along a slight incline via path 108 that becomes the
country road to Scheggia. After just a few minutes walk
you can see on the right a house called “Fattoria” and
above that, the small rural hamlet of Casarecci,
consisting of two groups of houses. After the second
group, on the left there is a carriageway, that is
joined at the point where you leave path 108. As soon as
you enter this road go down until you reach the stream
“Il rio” which should be fordable at any time, then go
up again until you are nearly at the top of Poggio di
Camugnano. The climb is quite steep and along the path
that winds through the woods you come across some
isolated rural houses called (in order) “Petralta”, “Sorbignalla”,
“Santa Lucia” and finally “la Fratta”.The road joins
path 102, at this crossroad you need to turn right
towards Poggio di Camugnano and after a few hundred
metres path 102 joins path 50. Keep on the 102 and after
a level stretch the path starts to go down rapidly
towards the river “Rio Chiassaccia”and the ruins of the
medieval castle of Pietramala that belonged to the
Tarlati. Having admired the rest of the ancient castle
return to the river “Chiassaccia” keeping to the left
bank, after about one hour’s walk you will reach the
road that returns to path 50 and to the house called “Ca
de Girardelli”. This road rises steeply and once it
reaches path 50 it needs to be taken towards the north.
Along this road some small rural houses can be found,
testimony to the peasant lifestyle that existed amongst
these hills.
The path, then returns to Poggia di
Camugnano and from here you go along the same road on
which you began the walk until you reach Galbino Castle.
