The protected area called ANPIL
Golene del tevere was founded with the aim of restoring
marshland, which had been altered by the construction of
the Montedoglio dam and by the nearby extraction works,
but which still contains habitat and important species. Golene refers to the part of the plains that are flood lands and that
is characterized by species of plants which are able to
survive periodicic total submersion. When the gravel
quarries were closed the water rose from the ground to fill the
excavations, forming numerous small lakes which were
colonized with natural vegetation
Golena del Tevere
da Viaio alla chiusa
The aim of this tranquil yet quite
demanding walk is the rediscovery of the natural ambient
of the waterways. Within this area you will not find a
route of marked pathways, the only one being path 14
which can be found on the right bank of the Tevere which
borders the entire ANPIL.
A good starting point for the walk
could be from Vioao, following North for just a few
hundred metres and you will soon be inside the protected
area. Once inside there are numerous tracks and paths
and by using these it is possible to explore the whole
of the area. Of special interest is the central part,
which has the most important natural characteristics;
here the Tevere spreads into a large stony riverbed
forming areas of rapids alternating with calmer and
deeper water. The vegetation in this area is very
diversified which encourages many different types of
birds to visit and make nests here, for example the
kingfisher and wild ducks.
It is possible to ford the Tevero at its widest point and once on the
right bank you can come back up to the remains of the
ancient Castello di Montedoglio.
