"The Via Ariminensis was built in 208 BC by Livio Salinatore and joined Aretium (Arezzo) to Ariminum (Rimini) on the Adriatic sea; along its way the route had many crossroads which then formed a dense network of secondary roads. In Roman times it constituted the back bone for military and commercial traffic, as can be seen from the bridges that were built in the valley and the inhabited settlements". (R. Bini, M. Mariani) |

At the foot of Castello di Montauto, near to a hunter's hut, you can decide whether to carry on through the woods, which gives wonderful views of the mountain range of Monti Rognosi and the High Tiber Valley, or to take the charming footpath which crosses the northern slopes of Monte della Croce, with a panorama of the Alpe di Catenaia, Ponte alla Piera and the narrow valley of the Sovara.
Using either route you reach the vicinity of
"il Conventino" (464m), from where, descending down to and crossing the stream of the Sovara, you take the Strada Provinciale (Provincial road) in the direction of Caprese Michelangelo to Ponte alla Piera (560m).
To go back towards the Sovara stream you again make use of the Via Ariminensis, crossing the Roman bridge which gives its name to the village, and going along side the farm estate of
'la Fabbrica'. From here you go up passing close to the Lago delle Pescaie (fishermen's lake) and return to the hunter's hut, below Castello di Montauto, and go back towards La Scheggia. |
