A circular walk right around the hill-side of Monti Rognosi
Route: EASY
Total height of climb: 153 meters
Approximate distance: 8 Km
Walking time: 3 hours
This route is suitable for all the year round: the simplicity of the route and its vicinity to habitations makes it easily accessible even in the winter. The route is special because of the outstanding views that can be enjoyed looking across the High Tiber Valley and the scent of the pines that wafts in the air throughout the walk.
The route starts from Poggio Castiglione: after leaving the cart track, you go through the pinewoods for a short distance. On the left you will come across the remains of old copper mine workings; turning towards the right and continuing up Poggio Castiglione it is possible to make out the remains of Castello di Castiglion Fatalbecco (540 metres), immersed in a pine wood that also contains noteworthy examples of other tree species (Lebanese Cedar).
Carrying on down the hillside you come to the rest area at the crossroads with the path that goes to the ex-forestry nurseries.
From here the route is immersed in the pinewoods, with occasional interruptions of meadows which offer a unique view of the Montedoglio reservoir and the upper reaches of the River Tiber. At a height of 553 metres you join the forest path that leads towards the Carmine; after a few metres on the right there is the junction with the path that follows the hillside and allows you to explore the western side of the mountain, with views that open up over the narrow valley of the Sovara stream and the rest of the Monti Rognosi hills.
The path ends in the area known as
"Omo Morto" (Dead Man) and from here, going through Col di Paiolo, you get back to the start point.
