There were many castles defending the Valtiberina and the valleys that led into it along the lines of attack that connected Arezzo to the Adriatic Sea.

The very best examples can be found here surrounding Anghiari, along the valley of the Sovara (the valley that is know as Suaria or Swine valley because of its concentration of pig farming).

Particularly notable are the castles of Montauto, Galbino and Sorci, transformed over time into private homes. Because of this, some of the castles can be seen freely from the outside but to obtain a visit inside it is necessary to make an appointment with the owners.
