Stemming from the iconography of the Madonna della Misericordia (linked to the charity of the same name), is great variety of similar works executed in the Arezzo area during the 15th and 16th Centuries, which we will examine in this itinerary. Starting from the frescos of Parri di Spinello in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Arezzo, continuing with the panel painting from the same artist for the high altar of the Arezzo church Santi Lorentino e Pergentino, which are now situated at the State Museum of medieval and modern art. In this museum, there is also an altarpiece of the same image by Neri di Bicci and there is a reliquary urn of Saints Lorentino and Pergentino by the goldsmith
Niccolò di Giovanni from Borgo S. Sepolcro, which represents the image of the Madonna della misericordia.
Polittico della
Misericordia of Piero della Francesca
Remaining in Arezzo another image of Madonna della Misericordia is in the lunette of the main entranceway of the Palazetto di Fraternita by Bernardo Rossellino in 1435. Finally, we can see the processional standard by Giorgio Vasari, conserved in the Museo Diocesano.
We can see a diffusion of examples of this type of image in the Valtiberina, among which there is a beautiful glazed terracotta piece in the Propositura di S. Maria delle Grazie at Anghiari and most importantly the Ploittico della Misericordia di Piero della Francesca at Sansepolcro.
