"An extraodinary tecnique, glazed terracotta. Examples in the Valtiberina and the Casentino area."
Glazed terracotta was an artistic technique used for a brief period of time (1440
- 1540 approx) and only in Florentine Circles: from Luca della Robbia to whom this technique is owed, to the workshops of his nephew Andrea who started a line of production which was continued by his son Giovanni with his closest collaborators Benedetto and Santi Buglioni. In this itinerary we will discover art which thanks to the procedures used are splendidly conserved.
Madonna della
Misericordia in the Propositura
We will start from the Altarpiece of the Madonna della Misericordia in the Propositura church in Anghiari, then we will briefly visit some pieces conserved in the Museo Taglieschi. After that we will go to Badia Tedalda where in the church of S. Michele Arcangelo there are three great altarpieces by Benedetto and Santi Buglioni.
The itinerary will culminate with a visit to the Santuario della Verna in Casentino where extraordinary glazed terracotta pieces decorate the walls of the Cappella delle Stimmate, the Basilica and the little church of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
